Tiziano died in Venice
in 1576 aged 99 and wished
to be buried in the Frari's
Church.
Between 1843 and 1852 two
disciples of Canova, Luigi
and Pietro Zandomeneghi,
built this monument in Carrara
marble in place of that
conceived by Canova himself,
whose original project you
will see at the Correr Museum.
The monument is composed
of an arch of triumph supported
by four columns with Corinthian
capitals. The statue of
Tiziano is crowned by laurel
and stands in the centre,
near him being the Universal
Nature and the Genius of
Knowledge, and on the sides
the statues of Painting,
Sculpture, Gra- phic Art
and Architecture. The two
figures placed on the corners,
at the base of the monument,
are Empe- rors Charles V
and Ferdinand I of Austria,
whose names are linked with
the great painter.
Five bas-reliefs recalling
the greatest religious works
works of the supreme Master
enrich the backgroud: between
the columns are placed the
Martyrdoms of St. Peter
of Verona (left) and St.Lawrence
( right ), while above the
entablature are the Visitation
( right ) and the Deposition
from the Cross ( left ).
In the centre you may admire
Tiziano's masterpiece, the
Assumption.
The Lion of St. Mark with
the Hapsburg arms stands
at the top.
