The internal façade
|
|
Crossing
the threshold of the Basilica
through the main doorway we
leave the plain Gothic style
of the exterior to meet the
gorgeous baroque of the internal
facade.
The centre above the doorway
is dominated by the funeral
monument to Senator Girolamo
Garzoni who died during the
siege of Negroponte in 1688.
The figure of Senator Garzoni
stands in the middle between
the statues of Venice and Religion
placed lower on either side.
He is portrayed armed and in
the act of being crowned by
an angel. On the left side of
the wall is the funeral monument
to Alvise Pasqualigo, Procurator
of St. Mark's, work by Gianmaria
Mosca, and on the right we can
see the monument to Senator
Pietro Bernardo, work by Tullio
Lombardo (16th century).

The latter
is divided into distinct parts,
displaying an elegant
urn embellished with fine
bas-reliefs in the lower part
and
the late Senator kneeling
before the Redemeer, to whom
he
is being commended by St.Peter,
in the upper part.
The wall above the monument
is covered with eight paintings
by the Venetian artist Flaminio
Floriani, follower of Tinto-
retto, depicting the Miracles
of St. Anthony and returned
to
their former brilliance and
beauty after a recent restoration.
Another painting is on the
left side above the monument
to
Pasqualigo: it is a work dated
1614 by Pietro Muttoni, also
known as Della Vecchia, portraying
St. Anthony of Padua
and his Basilica.
