The Chapter Hall

From the sacristy a door on the right side of the wall leads to the Chapter Hall, where the monks once used to meet. The hall has been recently restored and shows two beautiful columns in the center. From the cloister side abundant light comes in through the central door and two mullioned windows, providing also a magnificent view of the cloister of the Trinity and the adjoining convent, now destined to the State Archives. Above, the architecture of the hall is softened by six little round windows edged in brick with trilobate tracery in Istrian stone.
In the showcases in sight are kept some of the most precious pieces of the Basilica's treasury as well as sacred vestments and other relics: what little remains from the depredations inflicted by the French after the friars being expelled in 1810.
The centre of the wall is dominated by the tomb of Doge Francesco Dandolo, dead in 1339. The Byzantine sarcopha- gus presents a sculpted bas-relief depicting the death of the Virgin surrounded by the disciples with the Redeemer carrying to heaven Mary's soul in the form of a child.
