Aviano
At the border
between Veneto and Friuli Venezia
Giulia, either arriving from the
East Venetian Plain or from the
West Friulan Plain, you just cannot
miss the massive dimension of
Mount Cavallo rising and towering
above the highgrounds with its
2,251 meters from sea level.
|
It seems to contain the horizon,
especially in the brightest winterdays
when the whitest snow dizzles
the blue sky. Just in the heart
of the "Pedemontana",
the natural way bordering the
Forest of Cansiglio and lying
between the villages of Caneva
and Montereale Valcellina, beneath
the Mount Cavallo chain, you meet
Aviano, little town well known
for its winter resort of Piancavallo
and for the first historical aviation
school in Italy. |
 |
Nowadays the very wide airfield
entitled to "Pagliano e Gori"
houses one of the chief military
USAF - NATO bases in Europe. |
 |
The
name of Aviano is also linked
with medicine and
scientific research, as in Aviano
is settled one of the most important
hospitals in Europe specialised
for the cure of tumour diseases,
the Oncological Research Center.
Aviano and the Pedemontana area
have also an interesting historical
background and a typical economical
structure based on handicraft,
small industries and agriculture.
